The Sportcentrum Olympos offers a new program to change our sitting behaviour: the Active Break is 15-minute session of dynamic exercises at your work location with an Olympos instructor.
What is an Active Break?
It is a 15-minute energizer break for every employee of the Utrecht Science Park and all the Utrecht University’s departments (also in the city center). An Olympos instructor will come to your workplace to do a session of light exercises, such as stretching and fitness games. This will help renewing your energy mentally and physically after long working hours and it will improve socialization unwinding with your colleagues. You can join in your work clothes (no sweat exercises!).
The light exercises are beneficial for anyone and the Olympos instructor will make it accessible to every body type and every age. There is no specific skill required and no particular clothing. The Active Break is a fun and accessible break of the pattern of the day and an easy way to improve their health.
You can register through our online booking system (on the right). You can register now for an active break from January the 7th on the days specified in the booking system.
To book a session you need a group of 3-15 colleagues. The person who books the active break will be the contact person for that session.
Follow these five steps in order to register:
- Service: Here you fill in your chosen activity, the instructor, and the starting date from which you could be available.
- Time: Here you can choose the date and time per session.
The active break session is of 15 minutes, the remaining 15 minutes can be used by the participants to ask some questions to the instructor or to allow the instructor to move to the next Active Break location.
- Cart: Here you can book your sessions. If you want to book multiple sessions, click ‘book more’ and repeat the last step until you have booked the desired sessions.
- Details: Here you can fill in your contact data, the building and room number where the session will take place and the group size.
Payment details: Here you can write the contact details to fill the invoice. If it is your first free active break, please write down "first free trial".
- Done: You will receive a confirmation email with the booked sessions.

Interrupting our sitting behaviour
Multiple studies have shown that long lasting sitting behaviour has a negative impact on our bodies, both physically and mentally. This behaviour increases the chances on diabetes, heart and vascular diseases, but also mental health risks such as depression and burnout. On top of that, sitting for a long period of time is a risk factor for premature deaths.
By exercising more we break through the current sitting pattern and we improve our health. It appears that most of the benefits of training can be accrued from two 15 min sessions a week. Exercising not only renew your energy physically, but also mentally: even a short amount of exercise has a positive impact on your attention, memory, and speed in information processing. However, one active break per week does not replace your personal workout or sport activity.
